We are The Soko FundWe are a small charity registered in Scotland supporting women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Malawi to access university education. (Charity No: SC035554)
Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries. Education is essential to its development. By focusing on women, the overall impact is greater, going beyond the individual to entire families and the wider community. With Soko's support, Malawi now has many more women graduates in education, healthcare, business, agriculture, natural resource management and other sectors - all contributing to the country's development. Professor Leonard Kamwanja 1953-2024
It is with great sorrow that we record the death of Professor Leonard Kamwanja on April 6th 2024. Professor Kamwanja was one of Malawi's most distinguished academics and a former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi. From its very foundation, Professor Kamwanja gave the Soko Fund enthusiastic and unstinting support, and enormously benefitted the Fund with his invaluable advice. For more than twenty years he served as a consultant to the Trustees, and a mentor to the Fund's administrative staff in Malawi. His work for the Soko Fund was key to the successful graduation of several hundred women. Malawi's universities will undoubtedly continue to benefit from the major contribution that he made to higher education. The Soko Fund plans to mark his passing with a memorial that will embody its gratitude in a way that perpetuates his work. |
