The Soko Fund
Welcome to THE SOKO FUND a small Scottish-registered education charity devoted exclusively (and uniquely) to securing university education for women in Malawi – one of the poorest countries in the world.
Poverty means that aid to Malawi is focussed first and foremost on food, then health (AIDS is rife) then basic school education. Understandably university education gets almost no attention.
Experience has shown, though, that it has immense benefits, especially for women -- individual women and their extended families can look to a far brighter future, local universities can counter the ‘brain drain,’ and the whole country is able to capitalize on indigenous female talent. That’s why THE SOKO FUND exists.

We are delighted to say that the Soko Fund has received £15,000 funding from Johnson and Johnson to support healthcare students. This means we can support not only midwives but also pharmacists and optometrists. The healthcare system in Malawi is in desperate need of qualified personnel, particularly in the areas of pharmacy and optometry. This grant will also enable the Fund to establish a support network for our graduates in the early stages of employment.
10th September 2017
On 10th September, the Soko/Mamie Martin Fund partnership will have a cycling team in Pedal for Scotland 2017, fundraising for women’s education in Malawi. This is an annual cycle event from Glasgow to Edinburgh (the plan being that we have a following wind) and we already have several supporters keen to be involved. We’ll be training over the summer so you have plenty of time to get fit. If you can’t join as a rider, maybe you can support with some sponsorship of tee-shirts or practical support along the route on the day. We have a donation page, of course! – one for the whole team. Further information is on the news page or contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to get involved.
The Soko Fund is on Facebook. Please join us and help to spread the word about our work.
