University Scholarships

Picture
The Soko Fund provides scholarships to women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Malawi to study vocational degrees at one of Malawi’s four public universities (University of Malawi, Mzuzu University, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Malawi University of Science and Technology).

By recognising the essential need for women to fill roles of high-level skills, qualifications and leadership, Soko is contributing to the long-term development of Malawi and of gender equality within the country. We seek to promote the value of higher education as a means for personal and community development and work with the educational institutions in Malawi to invest in the future of the country.

We work with our partner universities:
  • The University of Malawi (UNIMA)
  • Blantyre University of Business and Technology
  • Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHS)
  • Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST)
  • Mzuzu University (MZUNI)
  • Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR)

Soko Scholars are nominated to us by the Deans of Student Affairs at each college or by our partner secondary schools. All students must meet our criteria and have the support of their Dean or Headteacher. Nominees must:
  • Be female and Malawian
  • Have a place, or an offer of a place, at one of our partner universities
  • Be studying a vocational degree
  • Be able to demonstrate the inability to support themselves financially

Each Soko Scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, and a small allowance, which the students can use for accommodation or study materials. Scholarship candidates are selected based on proven need and academic potential. Scholarships are reviewed annually. Students must successfully complete the current year to the satisfaction of the university for their scholarship to be renewed.

The number of awards is determined by the amount of money available each year, together with careful estimates of future income. It is Soko’s policy that all scholarship holders who complete each year successfully will be supported until graduation.
